Course Summary
This course brings chemistry to life as you explore the properties and interactions of substances that form the building blocks of matter. You will also participate in a wide range of hands-on chemistry practicals in our wellequipped labs to understand chemistry’s role in many fields.
Key Topics
- The structure of atoms, compounds and molecules, and how they are bonded
- The periodic table and the reactions of Group 2 metals, the halogens and transition elements
- Analytical chemistry: the tests that chemists can perform to identify different substances
- Physical chemistry, including rates, equilibria, energy and acids
- Organic chemistry, including reaction mechanisms and how chemists can build molecules.
Assessment
This course is 100% exam based. There is also a non-exam assessment of practical skills, which results in a Practical Endorsement.
Enrichment Opportunities
- Attend Twilight Chemistry sessions at the University of Southampton
- Take part in the Chemistry Olympiad and other external competitions
- Be part of the Brilliant Club Scholars Programme
