Richard Taunton Students to Support Phil Collins/Genesis Tribute Band
30th April 2017
Two of our second year BTEC Popular Music students, Ryan Pearce and Luke Downing, have organised their own show as an end of term project. Intrigued by the fact this year marks the 40th anniversary of Genesis’ performance at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, they have arranged to be the support act for a local tribute band ‘And finally Phil Collins’ (the official UK winner of the National Tribute Music Awards 2016).
The band is currently marking its 10 year anniversary with a tour throughout the UK and will be performing in France at La Cigale, Paris (where Adele, Prince and Eric Clapton have played). Our very own Music Teacher, Sam Adams, is the saxophonist for this award winning 11 piece tribute band. (We love to see so many of our teaching staff using their talents outside of college and keeping their industry experience sharp!)
On 5 May, the band will perform for the first time ever in Southampton, at The Hub Theatre, kicking off with our student curtain raiser, which will feature different styles of music from the 1980’s, with their own version of a Chaka Khan tune, power ballads and Bill Withers ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’. Ryan Pearce will be on guitar and Luke Downing will be on piano. They’ll be teaming up with Production Arts students from City College who will take care of the technical arrangements for the show.
Lisa Fernandez-Adams, our Head of Performing Arts, says, “we are very proud of our students for taking this initiative and for bringing such an experienced tribute act to the city of Southampton for the first time! They have also proactively engaged with The Mayflower Theatre about reporting on this collaboration from a historical angle”.
