Richard Taunton Students Spend Unforgettable Week In New York

On the 10th of February, students and staff from across the college boarded a flight to New York City, one of the world’s best-known megacities.

They spent a week soaking up the atmosphere at some of the city’s most famous districts and landmarks.

Manhattan is renowned for its impressive skyline and students enjoyed visiting some of its most prominent features. One such location was the Empire State, the first building in the world to contain over 100 floors. Its sheer height didn’t faze the students, who enjoyed getting close up with the clouds.

Amongst other things, students were also delighted by a tour of Wall Street; dinner at the infamous Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.; and, a chance to take selfies on Times Square.

Ann-Marie, teacher of Business at the college, said:

‘It was great to see a different side to our students during the trip and they were so effusive. I got a kick out of seeing them have wow moments, like when they first looked up at the Statue of Liberty. This trip to New York is an experience they’ll never forget and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it.’

A highlight for many included seeing the iconic film Mean Girls transformed into a broadway musical. Better yet, Performing Arts and Dance students were given the opportunity to take part in a workshop delivered by cast members from the show.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group were inspired by a visit to the United Nations Headquarters.  The intergovernmental organisation is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and students were eager to learn more about its mission and work.

On his visit to the UN, student Rui Marques Costa said:

‘It’s amazing to see the place where they actually reunite and talk about global issues. All the work they do is incredible and I hope one day I can volunteer for them.’
