Meet Digby, RTSFC’s official college dog
22nd February 2016
RTSFC are piloting a new scheme which will involve the college having an official dog mascot.
Digby, a black labradoodle, has been introduced as part of an experiment to reduce stress and build resilience in students.
Extensive research has found that young people can benefit hugely – both emotionally and educationally – from interaction with dogs.
Particular benefits include improvements in concentration and co-operation among students who have regular contact with pets.
As part of the pilot scheme, Digby is currently on site for two afternoons per week to interact with students.
As well as being very friendly, Digby is also hypoallergenic and has attended a ‘School Dog’ training course to prepare him for his time at RTSFC.
Donna-Marie Janson, Assistant Principal at RTSFC and Digby’s owner, says: “The response we’ve had from students to our college dog has been incredible. During mock exam week we were inundated with students who wanted to see Digby and it’s nice to see him making the students feel happy at college.”
