Thriving in the Classroom and Beyond! Meet Hugh.

Now in his second year studying Adult Nursing at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, Hugh Coomer’s outstanding achievements have been recognised with a prestigious Vale Kingston Award, celebrating his academic excellence, commitment to professional development, and compassionate care.

The Vale Kingston awards are given annually in memory Richard Taunton founders, Miss Vale and Miss Kingston.

From the very beginning of the course, Hugh demonstrated an exceptional drive to succeed. His curiosity and determination saw him consistently excel in both the academic and practical elements of the programme, continually challenging himself to deepen his knowledge and develop the skills needed for a career in healthcare.

One of Hugh’s proudest achievements came through his ambitious Extended Study Project. Supported by his teacher, Simon, Hugh carried out independent research that combined academic rigour with real-world relevance to modern nursing practice.

Recognition in college and beyond

The quality of his work quickly attracted attention beyond the college.

After being selected to present his research at a conference in Nottingham, Hugh represented both himself and Richard Taunton with confidence and professionalism. His presentation proved such a success that he has since been invited to speak at an international conference in Boston, USA, an exceptional opportunity that proves his academic ability and marks him as a future leader within the healthcare profession. We foresee a bright future for Hugh.

Alongside his academic success, Hugh has also earned outstanding feedback during his clinical placements. Healthcare professionals that he worked alongside praised his professionalism, compassion and willingness to go above and beyond for patients, qualities that are just as important, if not more so, as academic achievement in nursing.

Receiving the Vale Kingston Award was a fitting recognition of everything Hugh has accomplished during his time here at Richard Taunton.

A bright future ahead

Reflecting on his time at Richard Taunton, Hugh said: “The college was always understanding and really helped me to progress into higher education.  They supported me through my clinical placements, exams and clinical assessments.  I enjoyed their enrichment activities as well, especially football.”

For Hugh’s teachers, however, his success comes as no surprise. He’s described as “a highly motivated and inspiring individual who embodies the values of excellence, curiosity and care.” He has become a role model within the Adult Nursing programme and a shining example of what students can achieve when ambition is matched with the right support.

At Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, students don’t just work towards qualifications. They are encouraged to challenge themselves and embrace new opportunities.

For Hugh himself, choosing Richard Taunton came down to this; “I found a course here, that I wanted to do, that suited me, that wasn’t widely available.  I was really impressed with the practical clinical learning spaces and equipment as well as the close links to University Hospital Southampton.  The Ward and Anatomage table there is unequalled in local colleges, as are the guest speakers, visiting health professionals and the amount of unique opportunities we had.   When I came for a look around, meeting the teaching staff on an open day, I felt welcomed, supported and it was a really warm, friendly and inclusive environment, where I felt I could achieve.  I also found the student hub and learning support services incredibly helpful.  Through my academic tutor, I gained outstanding experiences and openings into wider and further education, for which I will always be grateful.  I will also always appreciate how all the staff and programme leaders were always in our corner and really cared.  The college went above and beyond helping me with my research project, turning it into an EPQ when it wasn’t on their usual curriculum offering.  I would recommend T Level Health Adult Nursing to anyone who aspires to be a healthcare professional as the clinical placements were invaluable.  The practical learning and mix of specialist academic study prepares you in a different way to other candidates to advance further study.”

Hugh’s journey is proof that with dedication, mixed with the right environment and encouragement, college can become the beginning of something extraordinary.
