Celebrating success: students win academic achievement awards

Two high-flying Richard Taunton Sixth Form College students have won a notable academic award. Faris Khan and Tamar Hodja were deserved winners of the Vale Kingston Award last month.

Former students Ruth Carr and Paula Prieto-Duran presented the award and a cheque for £100 to both students in recognition of their academic achievements. A little while later, Ruth reflected on their time together.

“It was great to hear about their studies, interests and hopes for the future. They have obviously loved their time at the college and will make great contributions wherever they are.” Ruth said.

Science Teacher Rachel Powell has been a big part of Faris’s journey, nominating him for the award.

“In Chemistry he is now achieving A* grades in mini-tests. Since the start of year one he has worked consistently hard to promote his understanding, frequently messaging me to get help with a question he was confused about. He has applied for medicine.” Rachel said.

HISTORY LESSON

Richard Taunton Sixth Form College has an illustrious history stretching back to the 1700s, with a few name changes along the way as the college diversified its courses and cohorts.

The Vale Kingston Award is named after two former headteachers. Louisa Vale expanded the sixth form at the former Southampton Grammar School For Girls, to help girls who hadn’t passed their 11 Plus exam. Several years later, in the 1970s, headteacher Mavis Kingston brought about her own change, overseeing a diverse range of courses.

Now a founding member of The Lighthouse Learning Trust, along with St Vincent Sixth Form College, Richard Taunton maintains its educational legacy by offering a variety of A-Levels, T-Levels and vocational courses which you can find out about on our A-Z of courses webpage. With term drawing to a close, the colleges have continued to recognise their students’ considerable achievements at recent Attendance Awards and Leavers’ Assemblies.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ALL

Executive Principal Andy Grant is keen the historic Vale Kingston Award has an even brighter future.

“I’d love to incorporate the awards into our Leavers’ Event next year. It would raise the profile of the awards even more and acknowledge the achievement of students with their peers and teachers.” Andy enthused.
