Workshop of a Lifetime from the Renowned Dancers of Balletboyz!

27th February 2018

In December our dance company, Release, won a worldwide competition ‘Fourteen Days Challenge’ led by professional dance company BalletBoyz. The winning piece ‘Moments of Connection’, choreographed by students and teacher Kirsty MacGregor, secured the company a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with professional dancers from BalletBoyz, former members of the Royal Ballet.

On Monday, 26 February the dance company took part in an exciting three hour workshop with Edd Arnold and Marc Gálvez, which involved learning repertoire from various BalletBoyz dance works, including intricate and fluid floor work. The students also learnt a challenging extract from the BalletBoyz dance work ‘Serpent’, which recently toured in Florida.

Kirsty, Director of the dance company, says, “The workshop was very inspirational for the students. We worked really hard on the piece before Christmas so this was a great reward. It opened their minds to a new way of moving and challenged them in a fun and creative way.’

Student, Samantha Penney, says, “The workshop really was a once in a life time opportunity. Edd and Marc were breath-taking dancers. Being taught by them was an amazing experience.”

Student, Andrew Banda, says, “Working with BalletBoyz was such a challenging yet rewarding experience. I’m so glad to be at a college where such opportunities are available. The dance company has really helped me to grow as a dancer and to work with Marc and Edd has contributed to this even more”.

Student, Katie Read, says, “The workshop taught me not only how to cope with a quick pace class, which is expected in a professional setting, but inspired me by showing me the skills needed to pursue a career in this field. I learnt how to pinpoint parts of the body that I should lead into movement and how to push myself into the movement in order to show my dynamics. I loved every minute!”.

The company will now continue to choreograph pieces to tour to local secondary schools in June, including a showcase at Oasis Lord’s Hill on Tuesday, 12 June at 7pm.
