Richard Taunton Student Scoops Unity 101 Radio Award!

9th January 2018

We are delighted to announce that Maddy Hook, an integral member of our class of 2017 Radio Club, was just presented with a Unity 101 FM Community Radio Award! This recognises students from schools and colleges across Hampshire who excel at both broadcasting and the production of live and pre-recorded radio shows.

The award ceremony, which marked the 12th birthday of Unity 101 FM, took place at the Novotel in Southampton this month and was attended by 300 guests including the mayor of Eastleigh, the sheriff of Southampton and Southampton City Council leader.

Head of Faculty, Aine Rand, who heads up our Radio Club, says, “We are so proud of Maddy and of all our former students who have also won this award over the years. Maddy was really ventured outside of her comfort zone to pursue her passion and further her skills and experience in this area. I’d also like to acknowledge Unity 101 Station Manager, Ram Kalyan aka ‘Kelly’; he provides an outstanding service to the community. He recognises and invests in talent and we enjoy working in partnership with him to help develop young people in this arena, and support their radio and media career aspirations.”

Maddy Hook, says, “I am delighted to have been given this award! Being part of the Radio Club really brought out my confidence. Being able to go out live on a platform every week where potentially thousands of people are listening is something that you rarely get to experience anywhere else! I am hoping to pursue my passion for radio at university next year, on completion of my Art Foundation course”.

Our student Radio Club, just one of many enrichment activities that we offer to our students, has broadcast live on the Unity 101 airwaves  for the past seven years and entertained listeners with a variety of genres of music, a different theme each week as well as insightful interviews with guest speakers including Labour MP Ed Miliband. The club offers students a great way to develop their skills and gain some valuable work experience. Some of our club members have gone on to pursue further work in this field. Sinead Ward, also an award winner, recently completed an internship with Capital FM South Coast and is currently undertaking an internship with Heart FM in London.
