Elite Athletes Recognised in Annual Award
28th November 2018
Two students have been recognised for their sporting achievements and dedication in the College’s annual Elite Athlete Awards and we’re thrilled to announce that this year’s winners are Warren Clark and Patrick Sear.
The award recognises students who perform at a county level or above and their commitment and dedication to their ongoing studies at college and to their sports. It also rewards the winners with a financial bursary, and has played an important part in supporting elite athletes’ continued participation in sport for the last 4 years.
Managing a full timetable alongside enrichment activities, training and competitions can often be a challenge. The college can provide support and flexibility for athletes whose busy lives can sometimes be a barrier to continued academic success. With initiatives such as the Elite Athletes Award we aim to offer some of the best provision to help students balance their academic and sporting commitments.
The two winners received their awards from Head of College Liz Lee and Curriculum Leader for Sport, Tom Barge, at the annual Old Tauntonian dinner – An annual gathering of the Old Tauntonians, an alumni association that brings together former students from numerous generations, whose generous contributions make our Elite Athlete Award possible.
Elite Athlete Award Winner: Warren Clark
Warren joined us from Great Oaks School and is studying a level 2 programme of sport, alongside English and maths qualifications. His passion for golf started when he was just 11 and as a young person with autism and learning disabilities, has not let this stop him from pursuing his talent and strives to make golf a more inclusive sport for people with disabilities through his charity Warren Clark Golfing Dreams.
Outside of college he is an ambassador for England Golf, the Golf Foundation and England Golf Trust and has recently been selected as an ambassador for the Special Olympics World Games 2019, as well as representing Team GB! In 2017 Warren won the Disability Sports Personality at the ‘Journal Sports Awards’ and is a past winner of England Golf Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

Outside of college he participates in taekwondo and has secured his third black belt. Patrick recently won a silver medal in the Under 17 English Open as well as silver and gold medals in the Southern Open.
He taekwondo talents also extend to coaching and over the past year, Patrick has seen two of his of students win gold medals in both Milan and Lisbon Under 16 European Tournaments.
