6th March 2017

National Apprenticeships Week runs from 6 – 10 March and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Our Careers team has put together a great programme of events to provide students, who are choosing not to go to university, with information and advice on apprenticeships and to facilitate discussions with employers.

College talk
The week kicks off with a talk / Q&A session where students can find out more about the various apprenticeship levels on offer and how to get started.

Visit to IBM
Thirty of our students are heading to IBM on Wednesday to talk to some of their apprentices to learn about their experiences of this pathway, how they got to where they are, and what their ambitions are for the future. They will also listen to a talk from an inventor, tour the Futures Lab (where they’ll see the build of an artificial intelligence system in action!) and be mentored by IBM on some IT related group tasks.

Jobshop
Students are invited to meet with our Careers Advisor to discuss their apprenticeship plan. She will provide information, support and advice tailored to their needs.

IBM ‘Create Your Career’ event
We are encouraging our students to attend this event, which will give them the chance to talk to a range of businesses (from Vodafone, BAE, the Navy, Lochheed Martin and many more) about their apprenticeship opportunities. The event takes place at the IBM offices in Lakeside North Harbour at 7pm on 7 March. (Event registration via the EventBrite website).

Southampton City College Open Evening
Taking place on 9 March, from 5-7.30pm, this event will feature a talk, on what it’s like to be an apprentice, from a Trainee Legal Executive at Blake Morgan. Attendees will also be invited to attend a CV writing and interview techniques workshop and get to meet employers with apprenticeship vacancies such as Specsavers, Southern Health NHS, Ionoco Technology, Morgan IAT, Southampton City Council and more.

Resources
In addition to this selection of events, our Careers Team is also recommending a wealth of resources to our student from apprenticeship job vacancy sites and information bulletins to company sponsored degree programmes.
